OLI WICKHAM IMPRESSES IN TOWNSVILLE TGRA GR CUP DEBUT

Erebus Academy young gun Oli Wickham has come out swinging in his TGRA GR Cup debut, walking away from Round 1 in Townsville with a trio of podiums and the effective championship lead.

Racing in front of packed North Queensland crowds, the 15-year-old held his own against a competitive field of seasoned rivals, including Super2 winner Declan Fraser, and even led the final race of the weekend.

“Leading into the event I knew it was going to be tough, so I was aiming to learn as much as I could for the rest of the year,” Wickham said. “I certainly exceeded my expectations and I’m very proud of my team.”

“To come away from Round 1 in Townsville with the effective championship lead and a trio of podiums was a great way to start our year. A lot was learnt from the experienced drivers around me and from my team that we can carry onto the rest of the year.”

Erebus CEO Barry Ryan was full of praise for the rising star.

“Oli exceeded not just his own but my expectations for his first weekend in the GR Cup,” Ryan said. “To run in the top three most of the weekend and actually lead the final race was very, very special to see.

“The experience Oli has gained from racing more experienced drivers like Declan Fraser and others who are far more familiar with this category will help him grow as a driver. I look forward to seeing more weekends like Townsville from Oli, it’s hard to believe he’s only 15 years old.”

The TGRA GR Cup heads next to Ipswich, with Oli firmly establishing himself as one to watch in 2025.
